Differences between PDF/X, PDF/E, and PDF/A

Acrobat PDF

In September 2005, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved for archiving electronic documents of the new PDF / A standard. According to ISO 19005-1, PDF/A is a variant of PDF. By using it, electronic documents can be reproduced in a way that preserves their appearance over time, regardless of which tools and systems are used to produce, store, or create them in the first place."

This retention allows PDF files to be self-sustaining. PDF/a stores this self-persistence by embedding information about the document (content, colors, fonts, images,combine pdfs for free windows, etc.) in the document itself. In other words, a PDF/a file doesn't need any additional external information to display correctly. However, in order to store its own persistence, this format must exclude certain features found in standard PDF files, such as movies, audio, and transparencies.

Acrobat/PDF

A PDF/X standard is used to exchange graphic content; a PDF/E standard is used to exchange interactive engineering documents; and a PDF/A standard is used for long-term archiving of electronic documents, blocking some of the features that aren't compatible, such as JavaScript, audio, video, etc.

In the PDF conversion development process, the document to be processed as a control to specify a standard issue to be analyzed and checked. The system will prompt you to cancel the conversion if the PDF does not meet our selected ISO standard, or to create a file that does not meet the national standard.

For print and distribution workflows, PDF/X -1 a, PDF/X -3, and PDF/X -4 (2008) are widely used. PDF/A and PDF/a (less demanding) are widely used for PDF archives.

PDF/X and PDF/A are both subsets of the larger PDF format. Designed for designers, drafters, engineers, and graphic artists, PDF/X ensures that electronic files can be printed accurately by any service provider. This consistency is maintained even when the document is accessed by multiple people in different places using different devices. Therefore, it is an ideal format for transmitting print-ready documents through various network companies, regardless of the sender or receiver. Along with providing a reliable transmission method for print jobs, PDF/X also offers other advantages such as file viewers, smaller file sizes due to better compression, support for spot-color printing, and technical tools for identifying print conditions. However, similar to PDF/A, there are limitations to these benefits such as the exclusion of transparency, encryption, JBIG2 compression and other features in PDF/X.
